Very few big city eateries pull the masses all hours of the day, seven days a week, but at much loved Amano, this is simply the reality. Amano is situated on Britomart’s waterfront and, over time, has well and truly embedded itself as a foodie destination and upmarket culinary institution. It’s a slick operation, with the 120-seat restaurant offering a warm and welcoming setting and serving delicious rustic, Italian-inspired fare.
The team aims to share their passion for food with their guests, with a focus on championing sustainability and locally sourced ingredients from growers and farmers. As a result, the menu changes frequently to reflect what’s in season - although a handful of signature dishes remain, sometimes with slight variations depending on the season. The scampi pasta is a best seller, and from the bakery, it’s hard to go past the flakey croissants and freshly made salads and sandwiches.
Where possible, ingredients are produced on-site. The bakery makes all of its own breads and pastries, supplying the restaurant with baked goodies (think focaccia, sourdough and croissants) as the changing menu requires.
Washing food down is made easy by the expansive drinks menu, which features plenty of local craft beers and a mix of New Zealand and international wine. The cocktail options are sure to delight anyone who wants to brighten their day - there’s a range of fun and inventive creations available, along with all the classics.
Amano’s spacious interior is welcoming, and its tones are warm. Views span into the lively open bar and kitchen, as well as across the dazzling Waitemata Harbour. The bakery is situated near the entrance, usually marked by the queue of city-slickers seeking caffeine and buttery pastries. No matter the occasion (or time of day), Amano is sure to please.
