Duck Island has been crafting small-batch ice cream in the Waikato since 2015. In recent years, they have expanded to both Wellington and Auckland, cementing themselves as the go-to option for their fans in the big cities. Founded by chefs, Duck Island grew from a humble but successful menu item at a fine dining restaurant to several ‘scoop stores’ which now serve as a playground for exciting new flavour combinations.

Behind the scenes at Duck Island, there is a lot of experimentation with locally grown, seasonal produce to create new mouth-watering ice cream flavours. Their small batch flavours focus on quality ingredients delivering a big taste hit, and you’ll regularly find a curated selection of new taste combinations (often reflecting the season) to try out in store.

At Duck Island, flavour and ice cream are done a little differently - whatever the flavour, you can guarantee the ingredient is actually in the ice cream. Expect toasted marshmallows in the Toasted Marshmallow and real lime leaf in the Strawberry Lime Leaf. A must try favourite flavour includes the Fairy Bread: smooth and creamy with a hint of buttery toasted brioche, strewn with hundreds and thousands; the flavour is fairy magic and certainly not just for little kids. 

Another popular product is ice cream sandwiches. Those with dietary requirements look no further: the choc PB&J is a vegan and gluten free sanga featuring creamy coconut chocolate ice cream and tart plum jelly between two golden quinoa cookies, dunked in peanut butter magic shell and covered in peanut-choc rubble. Our dairy-free and vegan friends need not miss out on the ice cream fun: with an extensive range of coconut milk made ice creams, everyone can partake in that joyful ice cream experience. 

Whether it’s a lunch time snack, dessert or just a treat to take home for later, Duck Island has a range of goodies fitting the bill perfectly. And with the ever changing variety of exciting flavours, a return visit might be in order sooner than you think.
