What started out as a humble sandwich stall has evolved to become a much-adored, artisanal bakery and cafe that has more than made its mark on Auckland’s Karangahape Road. Fort Greene may specialise in sandwiches, but it is also renowned for its bakery offerings, including sourdough and croissants, both of which are made from scratch in the kitchen out back.

Besides being an eatery, Fort Greene is a small Brooklyn neighbourhood in New York that owner-operators of the K Road joint, Andrea and Liam, came to fall in love with. Over time, repeat visits to one of their favourite spots, a sandwich bar making sandwiches entirely from scratch, was enough inspiration to open up their own back here in Auckland - with the name paying homage to where the idea was first sprung.

Fort Greene takes pride in making everything themselves (including the bread), using only ethically sourced ingredients and incorporating an array of complex techniques and skills to create a real point of difference. The passion is evident, from the goodness of the food and the high quality of the ingredients to the careful making of everything possible from scratch.

When the business first began, the main objective was to highlight the versatility of sandwiches. Obviously, these sandwiches continue to headline the menu, with the fish sandwich and the Rueben both being popular options and from the bakery, the French Country Sourdough, the plain croissant and the almond croissant are all also bestsellers. Whether it’s to dine at one of the tables in the tastefully designed interior or grabbing something to go, Fort Greene has all your bready kneads sorted.
