Close to the infamous K Road Sex shops and laundromat, where homeless men slumber and sex workers work late into the night, lies Tür, a clothing and homewares store come exhibition space, event hall and, as folklore would have it, occasional makeshift venue of late night parties.

Cruise past on any given day or night and know that you'll find owners Chris Duncan and Joe Yen tinkering amongst the warm, bright and clean space; Chris, a weaver, has his loom sitting in the store, wedged between the industrial pipe racks which house local designers’ wares, including pieces from Ovna Obitch, Esther Leonard and Joe’s own brand, Thyen.

See Chris perch on his wooden stool and work his weaving magic, his tattooed hands stringing fine merino and recycled materials such as silk, linen and cotton, into intricate and sizeable wall hangings, scarves and other goods soft enough for you to want to sleep on. Similarly, Joe can be seen cutting patterns or working on collaborations amongst his completed pieces, something unheard of in a world of mass-manufactured pieces leaving little space for lasting personal relationships with their designers.

Tür is a creative space continually merging and progressing to match the ever growing importance of art in Auckland’s culture. At any given time, Tür may home a ceramic exhibition, a fashion launch, a performance piece or maybe a market. Whatever it may be, Tür invites creatives to make, buy, touch, wear and use, while keeping the general vision that it must be fair, ethical and beneficial.

Be sure to pop by the next time you're in the area, as you never quite know what you'll find…
