All bookings are to be made through web form

If you’ve ever wondered what a burger joint would look like operating from your lounge, then you’d better head to Morningside over the next two weeks. Behind a white picket fence in one of Tāmaki’s most charming suburbs, The Real Life Restaurant by Angel Bay is flipping more than patties.

In fact, they’ve flipped a suburban weatherboard bungalow into a bistro that celebrates the humble deliciousness of everyday life. The setup leans right into the warmth of domesticity: swap your shoes for slippers at the door, step past famous artworks re-imagined with a meaty twist, and try a few doorknobs to discover which distinct dining space you’ll be seated in for the night. Each room is its own honest eating enclave, championing ingredients that often go to waste, with mismatched kitsch china to boot.

Every dish starts where most weeknight meals do: either the back of the fridge or the bottom of the freezer. The menu is built on fresh research into how Kiwis actually eat and what really hides behind the sauce jars, tackling that familiar moment when you forget to make dinner plans.

Look out for the Global Sauce Shelf Burger dressed in miso slaw, a Breakfast for Dinner Burger featuring a maple drizzle, the Second Chance Burger loaded with last night’s mac and cheese, and a Fridge Gazer Plate of meatballs with jalapeño popper dipping sauce. Home-grown favourites Angel Bay anchor every plate, brought to life by a dedicated catering team and the resourcefulness of Jana MacPherson.

Running for a single service on select nights across two weeks, The Real Life Restaurant offers dinner out without really leaving home. It’s a lovable, albeit fleeting, local bistro that’s equal parts light-hearted dig, warm reminder, and celebration of the imperfect charm of the weeknight meal.
