They say variety is the spice of life, and at Tauranga’s Macau Restaurant, contemporary Asian fusion plates pave the way. Featuring spices from the Silk Road and added fusion from the Pacific, the pan-Asian restaurant brings with it exceptional food, a sociable space and a dreamy waterfront location.

Macau is family-owned and operated, and in family style, the dishes are designed to share. Inspired by the communal eating philosophy of the Asian table, the shared dishes enable guests to not only sample a wide variety of dishes but also to embrace the spirit of eating together.

All meat is sourced from within New Zealand, with the menu centering around fresh, local, sustainable produce. Ordering the tempura eggplant is a must, served with sichuan caramel sauce, sesame, bean sprouts and mint, it’s a vegan dish that will undoubtedly have you coming back for more. The beef cheeks in the Masamaan curry will positively melt in your mouth, and the combination of flavours in the San Choi Bao lamb ribs are simply to die for.

The drinks menu is comprehensive, offering a wide range of wines, craft beer and of course, cocktails. There are a wide range of classics, but also a number of house specialties, including the Blue Butterfly, Macau Sling, Tokyo Iced Tea and for the most adventurous, the Penicillin.

The vision is simple: great food in a great space. With an interior that is modern and relaxed but with an air of sophistication, and a menu that will have you scrambling for a plane ticket to Asia; one might say ‘mission accomplished’.
