Arc Brewing Co. is just a 20ish minute jaunt from the Dunedin CBD. The craft beer, laid-back atmosphere and coastal Otago landscape make it a total destination that is more than worth the trip.
Owners, partners and beer enthusiasts, Emma and Jono spent eight years in Sydney before returning home to Dunedin to launch their dream brewery. As an interior designer and builder respectively, the two brought a unique skill set to the space that was a service station and garage for many years. Located on the right-hand side of Highway 1 as you head north from Dunedin, Arc is cosy yet operational, chilled out yet humming. It’s a fully functional brewery but manages to also be a place the whole family can enjoy.
On the far right side of the building, you’ll find the brewery and taproom. Emma and Jono built everything themselves and the layout is one that just works. Cosy seating nooks allow visitors to enjoy their pints in comfort while also exploring the brewing process that is seamlessly incorporated into the space. On the taps (and in the vats) are Arc’s beers which Jono creates. He does everything in small batches, allowing Arc to remain experimental and nimble.
A version of Arc’s popular Hazy Pale Ale is always pouring. With the ability to produce small batches, Jono is able to play around with different ingredient combinations meaning there’s always something new to try. Arc’s Momo Pilsner is another favourite. Made with Mosaic and Motueka hops, it’s assertive and aromatic. Jono and Emma serve their creations straight to their customers at the bar and are always keen to chat about beer.
Arc Brewing Co. also hosts a rotating bunch of local food trucks so that visitors can pair their craft beer with local fare that’s prepared with just as much love. So snag a pint and a plate and let your kids roam free. There’s a ping pong table for them to enjoy, a secondary space with a huge stone hearth and frequent live music too.
