Situated on Stuart Street to the east of the Octagon, Maggies has gained a reputation for their ridiculously good coffee, food and organic juices. With beans supplied by local roasters Vanguard, you can choose from espresso, cold brew and pour-over favourites, must-haves for the coffee connoisseur. Sunny, bright and cosy, a visit to Maggies is likely to make your day.
After the earthquakes, then-21-year-old Troy Butler averted his path from art school in Christchurch to the craft of good coffee in Dunedin and hasn’t looked back since. His café is a proud supporter of the arts, displaying rotating art exhibitions and hosting art show openings, as well as hosting other events from time to time. John, the wrinkly Shar Pei, is the café's mascot and will likely be seen lounging around when you visit.
So grab a coffee, give John a pat and don't miss Maggies' tasty food offerings, like the Reuben sourdough toastie which features corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and crisps. Polish your meal off with Maggies' famous cinnamon pinwheel, or any of their other homemade baked goods like the mānuka honey, pistachio and thyme carrot cake.
Hours could easily slide by in the friendly, relaxed and well-considered aesthetic of this space; with friends, on a date, with homework, or your favourite book.
