Finding a fitness studio that makes you feel good about yourself can be as challenging as the workout itself. However, as soon as you step into the Barre Base community, you know this one’s different for all the right reasons.
Established in 2015 by Rosa Anderson-Jones, Barre Base’s movement philosophy is as light, bright and modern as the studio space it occupies on Crawford Street in Central Dunedin. On any given day of the week, a team of knowledgeable and caring teachers lead classes for all ages and stages, with a focus on building strength, mobility and mindfulness in a safe and supportive environment.
While Barre Base has been on the scene in Dunedin for a while, Rosa decided it was time to grow the community into new cities and time zones. In early 2020, she launched Barre Base Anywhere, an online platform that makes movement more accessible, wherever you are in the world. For just $30 a month, subscribers have access to hundreds of barre, pilates and yoga videos, as well as a well-balanced workout guide to follow. Classes range from 15 minutes (they pack a punch!) to 45 minutes, perfect for busy people who still want to make time to move.
From dynamic barre classes you’ll feel the next day and mat pilates classes that prove lying down is much harder than it looks, to slow yoga flows to help you reconnect to your breath, both the online and in-studio Barre Base schedule is varied with plenty of options to meet your body where it’s at. As well as celebrating the physical benefits of barre workouts, Rosa and her team are big on celebrating the mental strength, energy and freedom there is to gain – making all those shaky-leg moments well worth it.
