Jizo might be a large restaurant, but its popularity makes it hard to get into on any night of the week. Known for its quick and efficient service, ultra-fresh ingredients, creative plates and approachable price point, Jizo is one Dunedin restaurant that cannot be overlooked.

The food covers all bases when it comes to Japanese cuisine – expect sushi and sashimi (fresh and beautifully presented), Japanese-style curries and donburi bowls, set meals and wok-cooked dishes as well. We, like most of the restaurant’s guests it seems, are big fans of Jizo’s sushi balls: small balls of sushi rice delicately topped with your choice of teriyaki chicken or salmon. At Jizo, the best way to eat is to order extensively from the menu and share with your dining companions, though if you’re not so keen on sharing there’s plenty to leave you well-fed without leaving a hole in your pocket.

Ōtepoti Dunedin is undoubtedly a city of some of the most discerning cheap and cheerful diners around, and that Jizo has stood the test of time since it first opened in 1997 is a testament alone to its quality. Jizo also offers a full vegan and keto menu and is always experimenting with new dishes that satisfy a range of dietary requirements.
