Walking into Gisborne's Zephyr is like walking into a ray of sunshine. That’s the only way we can describe it. Sitting on a roadside corner by Wainui Beach, this local plant-based cafe is all about nourishing people and the planet.

The four founders and friends, Ellen, Tiago, Angus and Jacob, established this sunny destination at the end of 2020. With the help of their best mates, they transformed what was the beloved Wainui Store into a warm and welcoming place of their own. Zephyr reflects the friendly disposition of its community and the happy sun-soaked land they’re lucky enough to call home.

The cafe is open all week and all year round, serving wholesome kai to a diverse group of locals and visitors looking to boost their health and inspire positive impact. Tradies sip oat flat whites alongside salty surfers digging into breakfast burritos and mums with toddlers in tow. Zephyr is inclusive and makes a point of being accessible to anyone in the region – those making small but mighty steps to change their everyday habits are celebrated just as much as the full-time vegans.

Hearty burritos, loaded bagels and vibrant smoothie bowls are available all year round, with seasonal adaptations and a few extra soulful dishes added to the menu in winter. From black beans and tofu to peanut butter and cacao, the kitchen prioritises organic and local ingredients at every possible moment. Oh, and we’re not sure what you’ve heard, but plant-based definitely doesn’t mean you skip dessert – so expect a cabinet filled with incredible cakes and slices. Make sure you check out the shop area too, with a range of organic pantry staples and natural healthcare and cleaning products offering better alternatives for your everyday living.

It’s easy to feel at home at Zephyr, with its retro couches, crocheted blankets, cheerful murals, and golden memories captured in framed photos on the wall. In the blissful months of summer, the outdoor area is a haven for friends gathering around picnic tables, dogs lapping up belly rubs, and individuals seeking a moment of solitude under a tasselled umbrella with their book or art pad. Keep an eye out for Zephyr’s vintage and craft markets that take place every few months.
