Hidden down a laneway off Joll Road in Havelock North, you will come across caffeine superstars Workroom. Operated by roasters Firsthand Coffee, their sister café Cupple in Hastings is a popular spot, as Workroom is too.

The vibes here are friendly and relaxed as people come and go grabbing their morning takeaway coffees or meeting up with friends and settling in for a while. The decor is minimal, monochromatic and sophisticated, with pops of greenery and plant accents dotted around. There’s a large window that allows you to peek in and see the Firsthand roastery at work—it’s always interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look!

Being run by coffee masters means that you cannot go wrong with your coffee choice at Workroom, and there’s always the latest and greatest blend or single origin being brewed. To go with your perfect cup, there’s a cabinet of pastries from Hastings bakers Ya Bon and a variety of other tempting treats to choose from. The best advice is to pick something to eat dine-in and something else to take away for later.

Workroom also has you covered when it comes to embracing your home or office coffee habit, with a range of paraphernalia for sale. From Moccamasters to pour-overs to KeepCups to all kinds of beans and instant coffee, there’s something to suit every preference. They also hold regular events in the café, such as a monthly cupping series which gives you a chance to try new coffees being roasted, or lessons on how to perfect your latte art.

We are spoiled in New Zealand with excellent coffee and Workroom and Firsthand Coffee are no doubt some of the best.
