Some places just have that effortless charm about them and Petals in Eastbourne, Lower Hutt is one of them. Part florist, part coffee shop, this little gem brings together the artistry of flowers and the ritual of a good brew with the carefree ease of a gentle sea breeze. Whether you’re after a beautifully arranged bouquet or a matcha latte with just the right balance of earthiness and sweetness, this is a spot where time slows down and creativity blooms.

Housed in a small garage right by the Eastbourne village, this compact space is lined with rows of vases filled with fresh flowers, allowing customers to handpick their own stems or choose from one of florist and owner Chico’s stunning pre-arranged bouquets. There’s a quiet buzz of conversation, with regulars stopping by for a chat while their coffee is brewed or their flowers are wrapped. It’s calm but never stiff, relaxed but never hurried - just the right kind of atmosphere for lingering a little longer than planned.

Chico brings with her a wealth of experience from Osaka, Japan, where she taught floral arranging and honed the meticulous artistry of ikebana. Her ethos is that flowers are like poems, with each bloom carefully placed to highlight the beauty of the next stanza and each arrangement tailored to the occasion. Her oriental lily and rose combinations are particular customer favourites, but she’s always ready to craft something uniquely suited to the moment.

Chico’s daughter Emma, an avid barista, keeps things interesting with expertly made classics and creative takes like the crowd-favourite matcha. With a dedication to both quality and innovation, the family-run team at Petals continues to bring something special to the people of Eastbourne, one beautiful bouquet and one perfect cup at a time.
