It’s incredibly easy to get lost in Schrödinger's Books, a small, independent bookshop in Petone packed to the brim with variety and quality. There is plenty to entice and hold you captive, from the aroma of new books to the beautifully curated selection and the old, handcrafted wooden shelves.
Opened in 2019, Schrödinger's Books has gone from strength to strength, even winning the coveted NZ’s Best Bookshop award in 2021. The store is a lovingly restored space, with original Art Deco windows and a giant old boardroom table that dominates the floor – packed with books, of course! There are comfy chairs to sink into to help with the onerous task of narrowing down which books need to accompany you home.
The selection of books is diverse: there's an excellent range of fiction and children’s books, and often complimented on their unbeatable science-fiction and fantasy books, Schrödinger's also has a broad nonfiction selection, especially when it comes to music and science. Of course, there is a comprehensive array of books about New Zealand and the store is always proud to support local authors.
Schrödinger's Books brings not just quirky and interesting books to the area, but also a sense of belonging. In what is already a vibrant community, the team loves bringing people together by hosting events to celebrate and foster a love for reading, in people young and old. There are regular author events held on the last Thursday of every month at 6pm. Visit their website or Facebook page for more details.
