For almost two decades the Feilding Farmers Market has popped up every Friday morning on Manchester Square under the clock tower in the heart of the Manawatū.
Many of the region’s most talented, passionate and well-known growers, cheesemakers, artisans, bakers, herbalists, apiarists, florists and craftspeople have stalls here making the market a celebration of all things fresh and local.
Amongst the 20+ vendors, you’ll find folks like Cartwheel Creamery. Their cheeses are all locally made and the delicious halloumi can be found on the region’s best café and restaurant menus. Taste a few and take your favourites to go. Focal Point, meanwhile, offers ready made salads and grain bowls that are nutrient dense and full of fresh flavours.
One of the oldest vendors, Henson’s Garden, offers fresh fruits and vegetables, while BABCO features homemade brick oven breads and handcrafted pastries. The Baked Dane, meanwhile, sells Danish loaves, crispy knaebrod and traditional Māori rēwena bread.
If you’re hungry in the moment be sure to give the whitebait fritters a look. Local farmers, Ash and Peter, serve these up fresh and have the recipe down to a science - “just two eggs and some whitebait”. In reality, these fritters are one of the most generous portions around and can also be made with paua or mussels. Enjoy one straight away and listen to the live music that features each week, too.
As you walk through this buzzy market, you’ll also find fresh cut flowers, hot sauces, microgreens, seedlings, plants, coffees, international cuisine, olive oils, cakes, free range eggs, meats, fish and other beautiful, locally grown and made products. The market takes place rain or shine so head along and enjoy.
