For a casual-chic drinking experience in the heart of apple country, look no further than Māpua's Rimu Wine Bar.
This spot has a rotating selection of over 50 wines as well as craft gins, whiskies and beers, which you can try as a 100-millilitre tasting or by the glass. The affiliated bottle shop has knowledgeable staff on hand to answer questions and share their expertise for when you inevitably decide to buy a bottle or two.
To get a sense of the breadth and depth of the wine menu, order a Tasting Tree to try five curated varieties—about a glass of wine in total, so no worries about drinking and driving—from the same vintner or region. There are usually several different trees on offer, and you won’t be able to resist taking a picture of the tiered display. Then settle back on your barstool or on the couch and sip and savour. Pair your drink with a number of small plates or a light, shareable platter, such as the Mediterranean option, which comes with a selection of cheese, bread and moreish spreads, and if you’re feeling a bit more peckish, snag one of the gourmet pizzas.
While some special events or tastings require reservations, for the most part, Rimu Wine Bar is drop-in only, making it perfect for a casual but special lunch, pre-dinner drink or late-night tipple. Saturday evenings feature live music, which you can check out in advance on their Instagram or Facebook pages.
