Every town deserves a late-night wine bar as good as New Plymouth's Itch. Located on the Ground Floor of the White Hart Building in the West End Precinct, the petite bar has earned a reputation for its fine wines and bespoke cocktails.
The friendly bartenders are poised ready to make you a memorable drink on arrival. Watch them razzle-dazzle as they pluck the bottles from the extensive range of spirits and wines that sit neatly on shelves behind them. Don’t despair if the Cointreau looks unobtainable, as a ladder is on hand to locate those hard to reach places. The list of cocktails is substantial and worthy of careful perusal (we love their take on a pisco sour), and if you can’t see your favourite, they’re happy to make anything you like. A testament to the knowledge and skill of these mixologists.
Itch excels at ambience too; dimly lit, sultry and intimate it's everything you’d expect in a late-night bar. The music is palpable, but not so overbearing you can’t converse, making Itch an ideal place to take a first date, a friend with a secret to spill or just barfly solo. A large curved bar takes centre stage with high stools positioned closely together to help ease the flow of conversation (either with your buddies or the bartender).
If you start to feel a bit peckish, Itch will take care of you. Simply choose from their handpicked selection of charcuterie meats and cheeses (that can be ordered by the gram) and graze away. It all feels very European and easy. There’s the option to have food and wine to go, giving you the flexibility to continue the evening at home.
Whether you want an aperitivo, a nightcap, or fancy a glass of wine after a visit to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Itch is the place to seek out.
