Mabel Vickers on College Street in Palmerston North is a quietly creative little black shop offering pottery workshops, one-of-a-kind ceramics and thoughtful gifts.

Inside, the fit-out is old-school, industrial and gallery-like, complete with many preserved details from its original life as a butchery, and shelves filled with pieces chosen for quality and character. One-of-a-kind ceramics are made on-site and sit alongside a considered edit of New Zealand brands, plus a few special international finds. It’s the sort of place you pop into for a present, but can’t help walking out with a little something for yourself as well.

Workshops run out the back in their pottery studio. They are hands-on and relaxed, catering to small, medium or large groups: whether you want to keep it intimate and personal, or entertain a crowd. You can shape clay by hand, paint your own piece or book a group session for anything from team outings, Christmas functions or friends who want to try something new together.

There is a family thread running through the space, too: named after the owner’s grandmother-in-law, located in the same place where her beloved family plant shop once lived. That sense of care carries over in the way their workshops are hosted and gifts are curated, so the whole experience feels warm and considered.

If you like to support local makers, learn new skills or gift presents that get used and remembered, add Mabel Vickers to your list. Check out their workshop dates, drop in on a Friday or arrange a quiet browse by appointment.
