Nestled within the sweeping grounds of an iconic Porirua estate, Gear Homestead is where heritage meets hospitality. A meticulous restoration has honoured this landmark's storied past, pairing timeless elegance with contemporary finishes. Pass through manicured gardens and an ornate verandah, and you enter a space complete with grand staircases, curved bay windows, and at every turn, the craftsmanship is evident.

Under the stewardship of Beth George and Dylan Boyd, this near-century-and-a-half-old homestead has been reimagined as a modern bar and eatery that channels the region's warmth and flavour. When the building came up for lease, Beth, who had been married here 13 years ago, and Dylan, who'd long dreamed of opening his own bar, saw the perfect opportunity to create a destination for their community. Today, the venue hosts private celebrations, milestone birthdays, and corporate functions, with gift vouchers available for those wanting to share the experience.

The pair envisioned a place where you can dress up for a special occasion or unwind over a casual drink with friends. Downstairs, the intimate cocktail lounge seamlessly transitions from a tapas bar to an elegant wedding venue. Beneath glittering chandeliers, velvet green bar stools gather around high tables while original fireplaces and polished floorboards anchor the room in old-world charm. Upstairs, light-filled dining rooms feature more character details such as rich wooden skirting and decadent architraves framing stately doorways.

The menu showcases tapas-inspired dishes designed for sharing: beautifully plated mains alongside small plates, all focused on fresh ingredients and thoughtful presentation. At the bar, weekly cocktails and mocktails offer seasonal surprises, from nostalgic twists on classics to entirely new concoctions.

The warm and welcoming spirit of Porirua is woven into every detail at Gear Homestead. It's a destination where history and hospitality come together over good food, great company, and genuine connection. A local favourite ready to welcome visitors from near and far.
