Originally starting out as a project to bring a much-needed eatery to Porirua’s Tītahi Bay, t bay café now serves as a cornerstone of the local community, bringing its residents and visitors together.

It’s an ethos evident in the design of the café itself. The large glass frontage and outdoor tables draw visitors inside, to then discover the sun-drenched deck and beer garden out back. An open kitchen complements the retro-modern fit-out, providing a sense of connection between customers and staff. It’s a far cry from the old library that stood in its place before owners Anna and Jeff brought their café vision to life.

Dog-friendly spaces, a children’s play area and local art displayed on the walls emphasise that this is not just a café but also a real community hub, a gathering place for those from both near and far. Most of the kitchen and front-of-house staff are Tītahi Bay and Porirua locals.

From sweet cabinet treats to full breakfast spreads, t bay café has something for every mood and appetite. The gluten-free pancakes are a hit, as is the seafood chowder—Anna and Jeff reported that people “come from far and wide” just to try it out. Their Turkish Eggs, Eggs Bene and burger range are also crowd favourites.

With the vision of establishing a café “as good as or better than” those you’d find in Auckland and Melbourne and everywhere in between, this spot certainly adds a dash of sophisticated café culture to Tītahi Bay. In addition to their genuine connection to the local community, you have a true recipe for success.
