Tucked within The Works commercial park in Elsdon, Porirua, Neverland Cakes & Sweet Treats is a family-run affair that proves adventure really does await in every bite (or slice).

Its sleek black warehouse exterior gives little away, but step through the entrance, past the glass-panelled facade with its colourful Jolly Roger sailing overhead, and you'll discover a pastel-accented cake and cookie store. It's as if you've unwrapped a giant sweet gift.

Leaning into the industrial setting, the wooden countertop is panelled with painted corrugated timber in mint green. Here sits a glass cabinet stacked with a rotating selection of temptations: loaded NYC-style cookies in both classic and trendy flavours; dense, glossy brownies; reimagined childhood classics; and inventive ready-to-go cakes, each a one-off creation sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Above, a painted banner declares the shop's playful mantra.

All goodies are hand-made on-site by three generations of women working together to bring a little joy to their hometown. Quality ingredients and affordability sit equally high on their list of values, making Neverland the kind of spot you can visit often without feeling the pinch. Despite the perfection of each treat suggesting otherwise, the cabinet never looks the same twice. In fact, it’s currently restocked with new creations three times a week.

Takeaway treats are the focus for now, though bigger plans are in the oven: a larger shop with coffee and seating is the dream. Until then, swing by, grab something sweet, and trust that whatever it happens to be, it was made with care, creativity, and just a little bit of magic.
