The Good Studio

The Good Studio is a gallery and emporium full of local and New Zealand made art objects, hand crafts and gifts. Housed in one of Riverton’s historical buildings that dates back to 1938, The Good Studio feels like an artist’s dream studio with big picture windows, bright wooden surfaces and plenty of space.

Whether you’re just browsing, looking for a unique souvenir or are on the hunt for something one of a kind to add to your own space, The Good Studio has it all. Over the last four years Melissa and Scott Thoroughgood have sourced an impressive collection of goods from all over NZ while also running their wedding photography business.

At The Good Studio you’ll come across beautiful items made of glass, wood, stone, pounamu, wool, felt and metal. Paintings, photographs, sculptures, jewelry, cards and other trinkets are carefully displayed and give you the feeling that you could spend half a day pottering around without appreciating everything fully. And while there is quite a lot on display at The Good Studio, it’s not over-done. The spacious gallery has an airy and bright feel at all times of the day.

One-off pieces from local artists add further intrigue to The Good Studio and one of the most surprising artists on display here is Melissa and Scott’s daughter, Nina. She’s only seven but her vibrant abstract paint pours have already earned her recognition and awards at art shows around Southland. The Thoroughgoods are a talented bunch and The Good Studio showcases their own creativity as well as the creativity of the community around them.
