If you meander down a long alleyway just off the main road in Invercargill’s downtown, you’ll wander into the Alley Cat -- a unique tattoo studio that’s quirky and welcoming enough to tempt even the most strait-laced person to get inked.

The studio entrance feels industrial at first glance, but then more of an oasis thanks to potted plants and hanging art, creating a memorable experience the moment you walk through the door.

After the Wellington tattoo shop that Dominic and Nicola worked at closed down, the pair decided to take matters into their own hands with a studio of their own. This time, perched in Invercargill. The inviting space opened to the public in 2019, showcasing cosy op-shop furniture and collections of Dom’s work adorning the walls. The space feels more like your best friend’s thoughtfully collected living space than your typical studio, and the staff makes you feel right at home, effortlessly soothing any first-time jitters.

You’ll likely be greeted with a podcast or movie streaming through the main space--undoubtedly a sure way to keep everyone company while the three tattoo artists on staff--Dominic, Nicola, and Abbey--get to work. Highly regarded on the tattoo scene, you can expect to book a few weeks out for smaller pieces, while larger pieces book out several months in advance.
