Open seven days a week, Riverton’s Crib Café has a retro interior and a no nonsense approach to café fare. Owners Pat and Cazna Gilder, who took over The Crib twelve years ago and hail from Seattle, Washington and Wyndham, Southland respectively, have created a chilled out, breezy café culture.
The cabinet stocks tasty items from date scones with “real butter” to vegan banana loaf. Cazna does all the baking and her recipes are well known throughout the country. Her gingerbread with butter and caramel features in The Great New Zealand cookbook which can be found on the book shelves at The Crib.
Pat whips up savoury items and hearty breakfast and lunch options. On Fridays and Saturdays he serves burgers and pizzas that are full of flavour and local, fresh ingredients, and the seafood pizza is a classic. The Crib is fully licensed so diners can sip on local beers from Good George, Tuatara, Behemoth, Emerson’s and more.
The atmosphere at The Crib is cruisy and inspired by Wellington’s 1990s café scene, with retro upholstery, a buzzy mural on exterior walls, vintage decor and friendly service.
