DEVàL’s story is one of family, tragedy and triumph. Created by Debbie Lawson, the store brings together her label with other New Zealand and international brands and a side of personalised in-store styling. The name is a fusion of Debbie and Val, Debbie's beloved mum who encouraged her love of fashion and sadly passed away when Debbie was only 21.
After studying at fashion school in Dunedin, Debbie worked in various roles in the industry before opening a high-end second-hand clothing store in Lyttelton. Later this would transform into DEVàL, with a second store in central Christchurch. After living through the Christchurch earthquakes (her store was in Cashel Mall, which collapsed on 22 February 2011), Debbie then shifted home to Dunedin before setting up in Wānaka to enjoy a Central Otago lifestyle, taking the beloved DEVàL brand with her.
It could be said that walking into DEVàL feels a bit more like walking into a friend’s wardrobe than a store – you know that girl who is totally charming and bubbly, has the best fashion sense ever and can’t help but dress you up in her favourite finds? Debbie or one of her lovely team (assisted by Debbie’s pooch Cooper) will greet you and help you find the pieces in store that could have been made just for you. With this personal service they will take you through gorgeous treats such as summer dresses, classy shirts and luxurious cashmere jumpers, from the likes of labels Camilla and Marc, Chloe, Anine Bing, Zadig & Volatire, IRO and many more. Not only that, the team will remember your style and preferences and let you know when something perfect arrives in the store. DEVàL is the exemplar of design and delightful and is well worth a visit.

We love to sit down. But it wasn’t until we plonked ourselves on a Wilson & Dorset Shaggy Bean Bag and lounged on their sheepskin rugs that we realised just how good putting one’s feet up could be. What a revelation.
