Lovers of Vietnamese fusion, fret not - Apache is here to stay. After a decade at its original site, the central city favourite has wasted no time in finding a new home on Tory Street, where it is as determined as ever to treat Wellingtonians to some of the punchiest Asian flavours in town.
Bringing a bold, fresh energy to Wellington’s dining scene, Apache remains a vibrant homage to Vietnamese street food culture with a French-inspired twist. This is a place where clinking glasses hover over mouthwatering shared plates, where laughter echoes off the colourful walls. Always lively and social, the space is perfectly suited to long dinners that blur into nightcaps. Not one to shy away from colour or character, the restaurant retains the buzz and vivacity of the former Wakefield Street spot, but now with more room for movement and momentum. Moody lighting and eye-catching upholstery play hand-in-hand with a playlist that complements the tempo of the dining room, rather than dominating it.
At Apache, dishes are designed to be shared and come as they’re ready, so make sure you’re ready to savour them and snap them for the ‘gram. Perennial highlights include the Imperial fried pork rolls - golden, crisp, and deeply moreish - and the perfectly seared yellowfin tuna that lands somewhere between delicate and punchy. The Shaking Beef and the luxurious Sea Meets Land showcase Apache’s confident handling of bold flavours without sacrificing finesse. The desserts have a well-earned reputation too, whether it’s the soothing black rice pudding or the Broken Leaves, a playful spin on a mille-feuille that offers a sweet finish with salty crunch.
Apache is all about a perfectly struck balance: modern, polished food that still feels spontaneous and fun. There’s no pretension here; it's just a genuine desire to showcase what good Asian fusion can and should be. It’s a place for celebrations, catch-ups, and dinners that run delightfully off-script.
