Chouchou brings a playful dose of Parisian flair to Wellington’s waterfront, with a menu and mood that make it equally tempting for a morning pastry run or a long, wine-soaked dinner.

Located within the iconic Circa Theatre, Chouchou buzzes with the rhythm and soul of the capital’s celebrated arts scene, actors on breaks, friends catching up, early birds with laptops, and pre-show diners plotting their order. The space strikes a confident balance between elegance and ease: think sleek black finishes, dramatic lighting, and pops of pink and neon. It’s an apt celebration of the creative chaos of Circa Theatre, where all are warmly invited.

The food walks the line between French nostalgia and modern Kiwi indulgence. Mornings might start with buttery croissants or a generous plate of eggs done tres bien, but the real drama unfolds as the day goes on: duck a l’orange pie, steak frites done right, and rich sauces that beg for bread-mopping. Brunch gets its own spotlight on weekends, with the kind of dishes that turn a quick meal into an occasion. There’s a considered drinks list too, with spritzes, wines, and classic cocktails in the mix, ideal for either easing into the day or winding it down.

Chouchou is definitely a place that rewards multiple visits. One day you’re basking in sunshine with morning coffee, on another, you’re lounging over dinner and wine. Whatever your pace, Chouchou stages a charming performance every time.
