A fresh, funky tribute to Wellington’s most iconic street, Cuba St Tavern is a celebration of everything that makes the capital’s hospo scene one of the most revered in the country. Brought to you by the expert team behind Thistle Inn, this is a place that knows Wellington’s food and drink culture inside out, and isn’t afraid to show it.
As a place that strives to honour the past while showcasing the best of contemporary Cuba Street, it’s fitting that the tavern is based in the former site of another local institution, Olive. Fans of that erstwhile establishment will be pleased to know its layout has mostly been retained, rejuvenated with a fresh lick of paint, some new touches here and there, and of course, enough greenery to get lost in. But the tavern isn’t shy about stamping its own mark on this stretch of Cuba Street: the textured timber, brushed metal, and splashes of bold colour are a playful nod to the street’s kaleidoscopic history.
The menu’s got that same relaxed confidence. There’s a clear focus on quality, and in another homage to the spot’s former occupants, there’s a well thought-out brunch menu that hits the right notes. You’ll also find daily baked goods, sharing plates large and small, and a hibachi selection from a chef who knows what’s good (hint: he’s done time at Shepherd and Concord). Wash it down with the house lager made by Heyday just up the road, or grab a classic Kiwi beer and park up in that infamous courtyard as the DJ gets the night started.
More than anything, Cuba St Tavern is about keeping Wellington’s one-of-a-kind hospo culture alive and kicking. It’s a bit of the old Cuba magic in a fresh new fit with a come-as-you-are vibe that feels like home, even if it’s your first visit.
