Wellington’s central city eateries are revered across the country, and for good reason. That said, the real charm in the capital’s hospitality scene often lies in its neighbourhood spots, the hidden gems that can put a sleepy suburb on the map. Graze Wine Bar, located in Kelburn village, is a prime example.
Husband-and-wife duo Max Gordy and Stina Persen (both ex-Hillside Kitchen) have worked tirelessly in designing the cosy neighbourhood bar, stamping their own touch on every inch of the space. Most of the fit-out and furnishings have been cobbled together from upcycled treasures that the pair have scoured from op shops and garage sales themselves. They’ve pulled it off exceptionally, giving the intimate space (there are only 22 seats) a vibe that Persen describes as “confidently casual”, with generous helpings of colour and nostalgia. Importantly, it also goes well with Graze’s ethos of thoughtful, low-waste food and beverage, using ethical ingredients and practices.
As the name would suggest, Graze is a fantastic spot to indulge in an after-work or weekend tipple. And as the name would also suggest, it’s a great place to graze on some neat morsels while enjoying said tipple. Gordy has put together a delectable, evolving pescatarian menu (ironically, the space used to be a butchery) to accompany his wine selection. Popular dishes have included the pierogi (Polish potato and cheese dumplings), with flavours that change according to the seasons; ceviche that highlights seasonal produce; and other fantastic seafood that local suppliers have spear-caught and hand-dived for. Stay for dessert too - the feijoa bun with Mount Eliza Blue Monkey icing has enjoyed rave reviews.
Having set out to provide a neighbourhood hub where everyone is welcome to gather and graze, Graze is a great pick if you want to enjoy the best of ethical New Zealand food and wine in a relaxed, local setting.
