There’s something special about a takeaway spot that just feels part of its neighbourhood, and Onepū certainly captures that spirit.
A vivacious splash of turquoise against the sunny Lyall Bay sky, Onepū effortlessly leans into the relaxed rhythm of local life. Bright and welcoming, it keeps things simple and coastal, with plenty of natural light and an easygoing atmosphere that encourages people to linger, despite the cosy layout. It’s the kind of place where regulars drift in after a surf, friends meet for a mid-morning catch-up, and families stop by while the coffee machine hums steadily in the background.
Owner Tom has long been a familiar face, having previously worked across the road at the iconic Maranui Cafe, and with sister Alice on board as manager, it’s a true family affair. Even the name reflects that connection with the surroundings - ‘Onepū’ comes from the Māori word for sand, a fitting nod to the nearby shoreline and the lifestyle that revolves around it. On the menu, classic grab-and-go fare is done well and without fuss. Expect quality cabinet treats and, importantly, excellent coffee brewed with Karamu beans. And it’d be rude not to try the signature chilli cheese scones, made using the original recipe from the spot’s previous owner, Ange.
Onepū is about far more than good coffee and good food (although you do get loads of both here). The real draw is the feeling that you’ve stepped into a cafe that belongs exactly where it is - and you’re welcome to be part of it.
