A true labour of love, Le Ciel is a plucky little bakery that brings tastes and techniques from around the world right to the heart of Wellington’s Tory Street. The brainchild of renowned baker Shuchi Bhardwaj, it’s a spot that’s as playful as it is elegant, where decadent buttery treats are served with a side of sass.

Shuchi has trained and worked all over the world, and Le Ciel is a melting pot that celebrates these global influences. The space is small but striking, with the terracotta walls and patterned tiles and cushions lending the fitout an almost Mediterranean feel. Throughout the cosy interior, you’ll also spot little touches that are a nod to Shuchi’s Indian and Tanzanian roots, as well as her time spent in Europe’s top culinary hotspots (as a hint to her pedigree - she’s worked in Heston Blumenthal’s kitchen). All in all, it’s a welcoming vibe, where sunny pops of colour greet you from every corner, not just the food cabinet.

And speaking of food - Le Ciel has quickly amassed a loyal following of Wellingtonian carb lovers, and it’s easy to see why. Le Ciel’s croissants - flaky, buttery, and made with obsessive care - are its “crown jewels”, Shuchi says. Other fan favourites include the pistachio croissant, chai-spiced croissant French toast, matcha pistachio brownie, and the house speciality - raspberry & cacao raw cashew cheesecake. Don’t miss the rotating lineup of seasonal pies and sandwiches, and with gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free options available, there’s something for every patisserie aficionado.

A treasured spot that brings character and quality in equal measure, Le Ciel is built on the idea that food can be equal parts comfort, creativity, and joy; that food should be fun and affordable - and never too serious.
