More than just a café, Addington Coffee co-op is a community changing the world one espresso at a time. Working as a co-op in the true meaning of the word, most of the profits made here are distributed back to the local community and to overseas producers and their communities. On top of ticking that box of creating some much needed good in the world, the offerings of this homely neighbourhood café won’t leave you disappointed. Expect some staple brunch options along with a few twists like tofu scrambled eggs or polenta crumbed fish cakes. Take a seat on the comfy couches, get that pile of laundry done while you’re at it (yep, there is a Laundromat adjacent to the café), or pick up a present from the store filled with carefully selected, ethically produced items.

Tucked away on the corner of Normans and Strowan Roads, Woods Cafe is a warm and inviting neighbourhood spot from local hospo legend Heidi Macfarlane (of Cocoa Black and Truffle Café fame). Expect first-class Allpress coffee and delicious homemade food – including what might just be one of the best cheese scones of your life. It’s quickly become the go-to for Strowan locals, whether for a relaxed catch-up or a takeaway brew.

Sophisticated and beautiful with a Scandinavian atmosphere, The Origin in St Albans will nourish all your senses. A rather new addition to the suburb of Beckenham, The Birdwood is a very welcome neighbourhood food hub indeed. A buzzing café by day offering delicious seasonal food created with locally sourced ingredients, fresh juices, nourishing smoothies and house-roasted coffee, and a dimly lit diner by night pumping out sourdough wood fired pizzas, handmade pasta and a number of scrumptious sharing plates, you just can’t go wrong with pointing your nose this way. The staff here are friendly and attentive, making it easy just to sit back and relax while enjoying all the culinary goodness coming your way.

Where Hoon Hay, Cracroft and Cashmere meet, Poca Poca Cafe is everything a neighbourhood café should be: warm, cosy and inviting. Its name means ‘warm and cosy’ in Japanese – a similar idea to the Scandinavian concept of hygge – and that feeling carries right through the space. Hidden away from the main drag of New Brighton Mall on Carnaby Lane, Switch is a bit of an institution in this seaside suburb – and it’s bustling on any given day for good reason. This quirky, family-run café delivers consistently great coffee, a cabinet stacked with daily-changing sweet and savoury goodies (the gluten-free brownie is a winner) and a seasonal all-day breakfast menu that holds tight to long-time favourites like a classic eggs bene. Vegans, vegetarians and carnivores are all well catered for.

Right on the beachfront beside He Puna Taimoana hot pools, Saturdays is named for everyone’s favourite day – and a nod to the 1960s, when New Brighton was one of the only places in Christchurch where shops could open on a Saturday. Today it’s a celebration of slowing down and enjoying good company, with quality service, a generous menu and plenty of options for dietary needs. Pair brunch with a soak in the pools and you’ve got yourself the perfect weekend morning, any day of the week.

On the corner of Bridge Street and Estuary Road, Dune Café is a true community hub, connected to The Bridge Hub community centre and frequented by loyal South Brighton locals. Tucked away in Ferrymead’s commercial hub, Dispense Espresso has earned a loyal band of regulars who visit for caffeination, good food and a chinwag. Owner Hamish Bell and his team serve delicious coffee and fresh sandwiches on Vic’s Bakehouse bread, filled with top-quality produce from local suppliers, plus scones, muffins, cakes and slices all baked on site. Fitting like a glove into the seaside village of Sumner, Niche Coffee + Eatery is fresh, light and timelessly stylish, with a minimal fit-out and a nod to beachy boho. Owner-operators Ben and Jo Holmes built much of the space themselves (with a helping hand from a few mates), and with Ben’s background at Allpress Espresso, coffee is at the heart of it all. Discerning coffee drinkers, this one’s for you – ideally followed by a stroll along the beach.

The dark horse of Christchurch coffee roasting, Lyttelton Coffee Company has been roasting and pouring on London Street since 2007. After the February earthquake left its 1921 heritage building badly broken, owner Stephen Mateer and a small group of locals spent around two and a half years putting it back together – and today it stands as popular as ever. Expect wholesome food, great service and a genuine commitment to sustainability, all with that quintessential Lyttelton charm.

One of the golden nuggets of Tai Tapu, General Post is a small neighbourhood café with plenty of practicality and style. Owners Larissa (a proud local) and Hayden returned home from Australia and turned their eye for excellent produce, design and sustainability into this hip spot serving top-notch coffee alongside a small grocer section. Look out for the counter, made from recycled timber salvaged from Hayden’s carpentry jobs – it’s well worth the short drive out of the city.

Sitting smack bang in the heart of Lincoln, The Laboratory is a much-loved local for the folks of this growing community. The barn like interior of this red brick building showcases beautiful old wood, curious little knick knacks and retro kids toys, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Serving equally well as a café (open from 11am for coffee and lunch), restaurant (think delicious wood fired pizzas) and bar (craft beer haven including in-house brewery), The Laboratory has got you covered no matter what time of the day you decide to pop in.
