Parnell is well known and loved for its thriving creative scene. From traditional galleries to contemporary exhibitions, eclectic co-working spaces, art classes and more, each pocket of this Auckland ‘burb has something new to uncover if you know where to look.
Our first stop for a hit of colour and creativity is Black Door Gallery, an expertly curated showcase of current New Zealand art and design. You’ll find it tucked away in a historic villa in the middle of Parnell’s heritage district, a nice juxtaposition to the contemporary style of art on display.
Upon walking through their bold black doors, you’ll be greeted with a considered collection of ceramics, lighting, sculpture and glass, as well as contemporary paintings. Kiwi artists are front and centre and the work on show explores a diverse range of techniques and themes.
With an ever-rotating collection, you never know what you’ll see from one week to the next. You might stumble upon Jody Hope Gibbons’ earthy abstract paintings, be entranced by Lukeke Lighting Design’s hand-blown glass pendants or snap up pop Kiwiana vibes from Simon Lewis-Wards.
Whether you’re simply seeking inspiration, looking to pick up something special or after a one-of-a-kind piece for your home, the team here have you covered. They offer expert art advice, help to facilitate commissions and ensure each piece is delivered to its new home with the greatest care.
