In the small foodie haven of Bryndwr lies Christchurch's very own slice of Japan. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with Irasshaimase, a traditional Japanese welcome, and immediately feel transported to another continent. If you’re after an authentic Japanese dining experience with truly exceptional cuisine then you need to book a table at Kinji and do it soon.
The restaurant's interior is modern and beautifully understated. Simple black chairs and intimate tables are set with delicate ceramic dishes and, of course, the essential chopsticks. Rich dark wood panelling brings a touch of warmth to the sophisticated black and grey palette. Bottles of sake on display and banners adorned in kanji characters enhance a space that feels distinctly Japanese.
Sashimi and nigiri-style sushi are two of Kinji’s signature dishes. Owner and master sushi chef Kinji Hamada, selects his own whole fish from local markets ensuring only the highest quality is served to his customers. The care and dedication to his craft are very apparent and reflected in the unparalleled popularity of Kinji’s sashimi. Beef tataki is another must-try dish and for those new to Japanese cuisine, a tempura dish is a safe (but delicious!) place to start.
With many dishes being served raw or rare, sourcing fresh high-quality ingredients is of the utmost importance. Organic produce, free-range eggs and marbled beef are all sourced from Canterbury farms. Miso paste is made in Nelson and a carefully chosen selection of wines is also sourced locally, with a special focus on Canterbury-based winemakers of Japanese descent.
A visit to Kinji restaurant is truly like an evening trip to Japan, complete with omotenashi, a heartfelt style of hospitality that is uniquely Japanese. From the warm greeting and charming atmosphere to the attentive service and exceptional cuisine, Kinji restaurant will leave you wanting to return as soon as you can.
