Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market is a name synonymous with quality fish and chips, having delivered the goods to Tauranga locals starting way back in 1996. Bobby’s sits at the fringes of the CBD, perched right on the waterfront. It’s casual and authentically Kiwi: seating comprises wooden picnic tables set up only metres from the water’s edge.
Bobby’s operates not just as a fish and chip shop, but also as a fresh fish market and deli. Fish is sourced from all around New Zealand waters, ensuring the selection changes regularly. Snapper, gurnard and tarakihi tend to be reliably fished, but Bobby’s always offers a few unique options too. The deli stocks a variety of products such as smoked mussels, smoked fish and the highly recommended seafood salad.
As one of the longest standing businesses in the vicinity, Bobby’s has certainly ridden the waves of the times. Covid-19 taught and reiterated some valuable lessons, such as the loyalty of their customers and the value of their reputation. At Bobby’s, selling frozen fish has never been an option: it’s always been fresh off the boat. Naturally pandemic lockdowns made this particularly challenging, but to this day, their policy has never changed.
Although Bobby himself is no longer with us, the business continues as a family affair. There’s a second store out in Greerton (also family run) and between them, there is an absolute wealth of industry knowledge. The team is always more than willing to share information and tips with interested customers, except for one thing: the recipe for the extremely delicious fish batter will ALWAYS remain a family secret!
