ADJØ is a cosy space with big windows and offerings that go far beyond typical New Zealand café fare. Owner-operator Jonas is originally from Denmark and ADJØ’s menu showcases comforting, delicious dishes from that part of the world. If you visit in the morning, the porridge menu is certainly worth a look.
In Denmark, porridge (or ‘grød’) is a staple. It can be oatmeal, stewed apples or even risotto, as ‘grød’ refers to the cooking method and not the ingredients. Porridge options are deliciously extensive at ADJØ and two of their stalwarts are: oat porridge with homemade caramel, fresh apples and roasted almonds and (arborio) rice porridge served with raspberry sugar, peanut butter, whipped coconut cream and freeze-dried blueberries. Pair any of the porridges with a barista coffee for maximum enjoyment.
On the savoury side of the menu you’ll find options like ‘Sardines’ served on housemade rye with goat's cheese, mayo and toasted sesame seeds. It’s simple but supremely tasty. ‘Mushroom’ meanwhile, another popular item, is cooked creamy mushrooms, parmesan and prosciutto, on housemade fermented potato bread with spring onions. Both are menu staples.
More of an egg dish kind of person? ADJØ does a French-style omelette with fermented cucumber, for a Danish twist, and Turkish Eggs (with garlic and lemon yoghurt, spiced hot butter, parsley and mint) on their fermented potato bread.
The wine and cocktail lists feature the best of Otago’s offerings together with classic numbers including Negroni. ADJØ even make their own schnapps, which go hand in hand with their menu’s flavours.
