Located on the shores of Midway Beach with sweeping views looking out across the breathtaking coastline, Tahu stands out in Gisborne’s restaurant scene for many reasons. Opened in December 2023, Tahu is the creation of  local Jared Johnstone, who is  of the opinion that both manuhiri and locals should have a place to enjoy the region’s abundance – creating a world-class venue for whānau and friends to connect, relax and break bread together.

The name Tahu comes from the  the process of personifying  the wharekai or dining hall.  The name is supported by a vision, to be the embodiment of food and feasting, and a reminder of the connection between food and identity; people and nature.  Tahu offers a gateway for people to learn about themselves, celebrate the abundance of the region, and honour its rich culture. Everywhere you look, there’s a story to be told – and there’s something truly special about being able to point out the window to locate the source of your kai, not to mention spotting historical waka landing sites on the horizon.

The menu is sophisticated but hearty and generous, with a focus on provenance and locally-sourced ingredients wherever possible. Naturally, the offering changes in harmony with the seasons and environment, with native ingredients making a welcomed appearance – from kawakawa to horopito. The dishes make for a great sharing experience, with sides of fresh salads and moreish carbs to wonderfully complement the main events. Got small foodies dining with you too? The kids bento boxes will keep them very happy.

All throughout the space, from the expansive interior to the wraparound balcony, you’ll find nods to the natural surroundings. The walls are coated in a soothing sandy texture and refreshing ocean green tiles, handwoven pendants hang above, and a kumara kowhaiwhai  motif is etched into the bar. The design decisions are intentional, resulting in a coastal aesthetic that is elegant, inviting and meaningful.

Tahu is undeniably re-energising the local food scene, inspiring a new way of approaching hospitality in Tairāwhiti. Whether you’re in for dinner, lounging on the balcony with a Makaraka Margarita, or hosting a party, there’s few better places to appreciate the beauty and bounty of Tairāwhiti.
