Beyond slinging exceptional dough, a pizzeria must above all be fun – and luckily Neighbourhood Pizzeria in Gisborne has an oversupply of this key ingredient in stock.

Marcel Campbell established this local pizzeria in 2015, starting out in a small shipping container before crossing the street and taking up residence in a white Art Deco style building on Ballance Street. It’s since grown into a cheerful destination to meet for after-work drinks, easy dinners with the kids, casual birthday celebrations, and any night of the week you’d just rather not turn on your own oven.

The pizza pros keep things interesting with a different special every week, alongside seasonal creations and all-time classics that won’t be leaving the menu any time soon (we’re convinced the pizza-shaped garlic bread has been delivered from up above). There’s tomato and mozzarella toppings for the traditionalists, with everything from prawn and Kaitaia hot sauce to smokey beans and house-made vegan cheese for adventurous souls. Add in your favourite Sunshine Brewery beer on tap, a glass of local wine, or the cocktail of the week and you’ll be all smiles.

Neighbourhood has created a cosy place to escape during the winter months, but summertime is unquestionably when it shines brightest. The outdoor area bursts into a spectacle of blossom trees in spring before becoming a lush, green and shady haven. Kids run free, live music sessions provide the summer soundtrack, a fire pit roars in the evening, and picnic tables are filled with people just having a really (really) good time.
