Providing the town with their sun, sand and surf uniforms since 1983, Blitz is quite the Gisborne icon. This independent family-owned surf shop is a haven for those who practically live in the water and at the skatepark (or simply enjoy kicking back in some jandals and boardies).
Everything you need to soak up the good life can be found here, from quality surfboards and wetsuits to skateboards and laid-back street styles. There’s a focus on reputable brands that have stood the test of time, so expect to be reunited with all the classics as well as some new leading names. Blitz is also one of the few local spots catering to men’s wardrobes, making it especially popular with the lads about town.
Owner Euan Nelson took over the reins in 2009, returning home to Gisborne after spending almost a decade in London. He’s stayed true to the shop’s coastal roots, while introducing a thriving e-commerce site that connects with surf and skate communities all over Aotearoa. One of the coolest things about the website, though? The free HD livestream, giving anyone access to the current conditions at the southern end of Wainui Beach. It’s their small way of saying thanks to those who’ve supported the local business since way back.
We all know any shop can have a top-of-the-line product range, but the Blitz service adds an extra special touch. The team is super friendly and always willing to share hoards of expert advice and recommendations, whether that’s choosing the right board for you or spilling some local surf tips. As keen surfers themselves, chances are you’ll be riding waves alongside one another.
Euan and his crew have cultivated an inclusive environment for people of all abilities and ages. Entering the surf scene can seem intimidating at first, but the absence of ego and judgement makes Blitz an inviting place for seasoned surfers and beginner bodyboarders alike.
