As soon as the first light touches Gisborne, the Raglan Roast coffee machine is up and at ‘em, ready to wake up the town with strong brews. Every day, a diverse mix of surfers, hi-vis crews, out-of-towners, office workers, retirees, nomads, dogs, and everyone in between, make their way down to Wainui Road for their early morning ritual.
The coffee shop’s simple and rustic setting suits the East Coast lifestyle nicely, with a bustling atmosphere that remains laid-back at all times. Outdoor tables provide an excellent spot to enjoy your brew (served in one of the cafe’s retro thrifted coffee cups) while soaking up the soft golden sunlight and yarning to your neighbour. Inside, an eclectic medley of second-hand sofas and armchairs invite you to unwind while flicking through one of many surf magazines. Amongst the beachy decor, Māori carvings and colourful Kōwhaiwhai patterns etched into the counter fill the room with local character and culture.
A range of Raglan Roast products are also available to purchase, including cool cans of their iced coffee range, branded reusable cups, jars of quality instant coffee (great for adventures in the wild or on the sand), 100% raw honey unique to the Raglan region, and a whole range of equipment for your at-home brewing needs.
While the business originated in Raglan in 2000 and has since grown to 12 sites nationwide (and counting), no two locations are the same – and this one on Wainui Road is Gizzy through and through.
