Camped neatly beside a local church with ample parking available, The Custard Pie is the kind of sweet, sugar-filled discovery that makes you sing Hallelujah. Since taking over, husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Gia have built on a true Kapiti success story, bringing plenty of heart, energy, and familiar faces along with them.

The striking black container presents a unique first impression, but the real magic here revolves around the community that gathers around it. Regulars are greeted by name, conversations bounce between staff and customers on the deck, and dogs wait patiently beside the outdoor tables. Orders move at an impressive pace, helped by a team that’s as efficient as it is friendly, while laid-back music and plenty of good-natured banter keep the atmosphere light.

The menu has all the hallmarks of a local joint that understands exactly what the people want. Coffee is front and centre, but it's far from the only reason to stop. Naturally, the namesake vanilla custard pie steals the spotlight - fresh custard is made daily before being poured into a buttery sweet shortcrust shell, and on busy days multiple batches are needed just to keep up with demand. Savoury fiends are looked after as well, covering breakfast, lunch, and everything in between - their famous cheesy flatbreads have become a local obsession. Meanwhile, the cabinet is packed with other house-baked favourites: a yummy selection of scones and an ever-changing line-up of perfectly portioned slices, including several gluten-free options.

There's an easy generosity to The Custard Pie that extends beyond the food. Locally grown flowers and plants, gift vouchers, and the ease of selecting a box of mixed sweet treats make it a handy spot for picking up a thoughtful gift. It’s the sort of business that has seamlessly become woven into daily life on the Kapiti Coast - and judging by the steady stream of smiling regulars, that's exactly how everyone likes it.
