On the hunt for authentic and traditional Thai food in the heart of Ōamaru, then look no further than Bangkok Recipe. Named for the capital city, the dishes at this restaurant pay homage to the many diverse cuisines you find in Bangkok and dining here, you’ll experience a celebration of exotic flavours.
Gong and Karrie are the owners and operators of Bangkok Recipe, both originally from Thailand, they first came to New Zealand to study and loved it so much that they chose to make their home here in Ōamaru. Both are big foodies, love to travel and enjoy experiencing cuisines from around the world but time and time again, they kept getting drawn back to their Thai origins. So when they had the opportunity to take over Bangkok Recipe, they jumped at the chance and every day they enjoy educating locals and visitors alike on what true Thai food tastes like.
The restaurant itself is small and perfectly formed, always bustling with diners, with a balance of those eating in and enjoying a banquet of delicious dishes to the regulars popping in to pick up their takeaway orders.
When it comes to the menu at Bangkok Recipe, there are two pathways you can take; ‘The Classic Thai’ with familiar favourites such as green curry and pad thai. Or you can go with ‘The Advanced Thai’ option, where you might come across dishes that are new to you. Karrie recommends the mouthwatering roasted duck red curry or the drunken crispy pork belly that is somewhat of a signature dish at Bangkok Recipe. No matter what you choose, it’s guaranteed to be delicious and full of exotic flavours, as well as using the very best ingredients from local growers.
Pair your meal with a glass of Waitaki Valley wine or a local craft beer, and you have yourself the perfect slice of authentic Thai meets Kiwi hospitality in Ōamaru.
