40 Bledisloe Street, Kurow

When Bex Hayman gifted her husband a sterling silver dog whistle in lieu of a traditional wedding ring, little did she know that this thoughtful token would be the catalyst for a boutique family-owned jewellery business with a mighty following.

Whistle & Pop designs timeless and sophisticated jewellery with a rural twist, using only the finest high-quality metals, including sterling silver and 18ct gold, made to last a lifetime. From the dog whistle necklaces that started it all to stamped bullet rings, dainty cattle tag earrings and Number 8 wire-inspired bangles, each piece is a celebration of the strength, resourcefulness and resilience of country people.

Since launching at the end of 2016, Whistle & Pop operated as an online store, with their headquarters based at Bex’s family farm in the hills of Hakataramea Valley. Fast forward to mid-2024 and an exciting opportunity arose to open a brick-and-mortar shop on the main street of Kurow, showcasing the full collection in a warm space illuminated by the sunrise orange feature wall. Alongside the iconic jewellery range, you’ll also find natural candles, hats, 100% wool and silk scarves, and more chic but practical accessories.

Whistle & Pop is driven by a commitment to protect the land for future generations, consciously adopting ethical and environmental practices throughout every step of the process. Each collection is produced in small batches using ethically-sourced materials and carefully selected manufacturers, and elegantly delivered in all-natural country-inspired packaging. While Bex spearheads most of the collections, she’ll often collaborate with local NZ-based designers on special releases.

Whether you grew up on a farm or have fond memories of visiting friends and family in the wide open paddocks, Whistle & Pop offers beautiful pieces to keep the country close to your heart.
