A former top-six contestant on Masterchef New Zealand and a self-confessed fitness aficionado, there’s no doubt Sushil Ravikumar knows his stuff when it comes to whipping up tasty, healthy food.

His cafe, aptly named Sushil’s Musclechef, brings to life his philosophy of healthy yet interesting food and is a great excuse to make the trip out to Porirua. Based in a suburban street in Aotea among a small row of shops, Sushil’s Musclechef is a simple, unobtrusive eatery that blends into the neighbourhood. A classic cafe layout lies within, minimalist in nature but pleasing to the soul, much like the nutritious and eclectic dishes on offer. Sushil’s ethos is simple, “To bring people together and build healthier communities, through our love for food,” and as a growing community hub, the cafe truly lives by this principle.

Take one look at the menu and Sushil’s relentless focus on health and fitness is clear. The protein waffles and wellness bowls stand out for this, and coincidentally Sushil says that they are among the most popular items. The tacos are another signature Musclechef creation (choose from buttermilk fried chicken, smoky pulled pork, or Cajun spice jackfruit), and with pasta, burgers, and an impressive array of other dishes, there are plenty of options whether you’re heading here for breakfast or lunch. And with all dietary requirements looked after, the cafe goes the extra mile to ensure no one is left out.

Manifesting a core philosophy and consistently sticking by it is a proven recipe for many a successful eatery. Sushil’s Musclechef is a prime example of this in action in Porirua, and a visit to this cafe will prove that healthy eating certainly doesn’t have to be boring.
