Baked goods and beaches are two of the best things about Wellington, and you can find both in close proximity in a cosy corner of Plimmerton.

The Cake Cafe is the brainchild of mum-and-daughter team Cate and Natalie, and the two have effortlessly carved a happy little niche for themselves in this quiet Porirua neighbourhood. A compact cafe, what it lacks in size, it makes up for with warm colours. Eye-catching pastel pink and lilac is draped across the storefront and emblazoned on the walls inside, while the glass cabinets are stocked with a dazzling array of both sweet and savoury baked treats. The tables tucked away around the corner invite you to indulge in your cupcakes and cookies in solitude.

As the name suggests, cakes are the showpiece here, from filled cupcakes (there are plenty of vegan and gluten-free options) to cheesecakes and giant, custom-made creations. And while you’re here, you might as well get a taste of the other treats as well, whether it’s a classic brownie or those tempting cookie sandwiches. Don’t sleep on the savoury stuff either—one of The Cake Cafe’s most popular items is its cheese scones, which come in an impressive range of flavours and variations (the cheese and bacon scone is a particularly hot commodity).

On a nice day, you can easily take your cake and coffee to Plimmerton Beach just down the road and watch the waves as you savour each bite. Whether it’s in the cafe, on the beach, or at home, wherever you choose to enjoy The Cake Cafe’s creations, you’re guaranteed a good time.
