Moana Road, Karehana Bay, Porirua
Tucked away in a small nook at the north-western end of Plimmerton, Karehana Bay is often overlooked by visitors to Porirua. Perhaps it’s best kept that way, though, as the bay is one of the region’s best-kept summer secrets.
A fantastic spot to chill at any time of year, the flat, sandy beach really comes to life in the warmer months. A gentle gradient means it’s accessible and safe for all, and the Plimmerton Yacht Club acts as a shield against the swells. The bay is popular among locals who are keen to dip into some water fun, whether it’s boating, snorkelling, or just a cruisy swim. Fishers often gather on the nearby jetty, and you’re welcome to join. But if you’re after a quick, greasy dinner on the beach, head down the road to Plimmerton Fish Supply for a fish and chips fix, or check out the cafés dotted around Plimmerton Village.
It’s not just about the beach life, though. Karehana Bay Scenic Reserve is just up the road and offers plenty more ways to enjoy the natural surroundings. Take a walk around the reserve (dogs are welcome, too), indulge in a bit of bird watching, or kick back while the kids explore the playground. With views of Karehana Bay, Mana Island, and beyond, it’s a superb vantage point from which to soak in the area.
Small, sheltered, but certainly not boring, Karehana Bay does a fantastic job of upholding Porirua’s reputation as a true beach hotspot.
