The greater Wellington region is renowned for its cultural diversity, manifested in part by the growing range of exotic eateries. In popular Polish bistro Topor, Plimmerton boasts a true hidden gem and one of the capital’s most-loved ethnic restaurants.

Sitting at the end of a block of small shops deep in Porirua suburbia, Topor exudes a cosy neighbourly feel from the outside, complemented with a touch of elegance the moment you step in. Glittering chandeliers and fairy lights are juxtaposed against the straightforward red-and-white colour scheme—the place is loudly and proudly Polish and not afraid to flaunt it. Polish proverbs adorn the walls, giving your mind something to chew over as you await your meal.

It may seem like a lot to take in, but the little touches make all the difference. Designed in the style of a gabion, the striking counter at the heart of the restaurant will catch your eye straight away and is a clever nod to the beach just down the road.

Those clued up on Polish cuisine will feel right at home, with a menu featuring the classics: dig into all the pierogi, bigos, and golabki you can handle. There's the option to pair your meal with an expertly matched Topors Own vodka, or if you want to go all out, just ask for the vodka tasting paddle. Whatever you order, see if you can resist pulling out the smartphone for a snap, as the intricate effort that goes into each dish is truly captivating.

Plimmerton may not be the place you’d expect to find an authentic and immensely popular Polish restaurant, but a trip out this way is certainly worth the effort. Na zdrowie!
