The Green Room Café has quietly overseen happenings on Gore’s Irk Street for nearly thirty years. Charming and cosy, the patrons have more than a few happy stories to share when it comes to The Green Room, Gore and each other.
Old mirrors, upcycled trinkets and refurbished theatre seats (from St. James Theatre which is just next door) give The Green Room its own flare and a comfortable atmosphere in which to sip on coffee, loose leaf teas, smoothies, iced chocolates and organic juices.
Locals and tourists alike gather to chat, read the paper, have coffee and enjoy yummy homemade treats. Cathy Borthwick, the café’s third owner operator, has been a Green Room regular since 1996. And while the ethos behind the café remains the same, Cathy and her team have consciously updated the menu to include tasty options for all palates and diets. Gluten free mashed salmon cake, bacon and brie pie, ham croissants, bacon and egg bagel and corn fritters grace the savoury side of the cabinet while daily made salads and soups offer even more variety. Polish off your Green Room experience with any of their homemade slices or cakes. The carrot cake is consistently a top seller and comes heaped with decadent icing and a generous pile of pumpkin seeds and walnuts that add an important crunch factor.
For the ultimate afternoon on Irk Street catch a movie at St. James Theatre, Gore’s art deco cinema. Afterwards, head next door to The Green Room for a filling meal over which you can discuss the film and get a taste of local life.
