Just a short stroll from Oriental Bay in Wellington, Indian Alley is a classy little restaurant that offers something new and exciting to even the most seasoned enthusiasts of Indian cuisine.
A real labour of love from owners Neha and Sushant, Indian Alley sets out to weave the rich cultural heritage of India into the tapestry of central Wellington. Traditional and modern elements are intertwined throughout the restaurant, demonstrated in the vibrant splashes of colour set against a chic black canvas. Intricate patterns and ornate details lend the place an exotic air without being overpowering, complemented by the soft Indian tunes and the aromatic spices wafting from the open kitchen.
Fusing the authentic with the modern is the name of the game here, and it’s executed to perfection. In addition to the traditional curries familiar to all - and served in generous portions - the signature dishes at Indian Alley are well worth investigating. Of particular note is the parda biryani, a twist on the classic biryani, which is sealed with a layer of dough to lock in the flavours and aromas. The kasoori chicken tikka is another must-try, featuring tender pieces of chicken infused with the aroma of kasoori. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes abound, ensuring a well-rounded and inclusive menu.
Indian Alley has set out to redefine Indian cuisine in Wellington, breaking through the cliches and stereotypes while staying true to the essence of what makes Indian food great. Don’t expect to come here for your standard curry fix, but do expect to leave with a reimagination of what Indian food should resemble.
