A happy mix of West meets East, pink meets green, and beer meets bao, Wellington's Mr Go’s is proof that an eatery needn’t stick to one concrete theme.

Tiled floors, exposed ceiling and stick fluorescent lighting are background to the attentive staff who are happy to help you through the extensive menu, and provide any encouragement that’s needed for the slightly more conservative eaters. Kung pao cauliflower, spinach chaat, popcorn chicken (Taiwanese style) and tamarind prawns are just a handful of the sharing ‘bites’ available, while the unique dumpling menu is a welcome change to the usual dumpling scene.

A clear winner is the crowd favourite Gua Bao’s (literally translating to cut/open bun), the Taiwanese street ‘burger’ which mixes generous amounts of filling into a house made steamed milk Bao bun. Catering to popular demand sees Mr Go’s offering a $7 Bao of the day every day of the week, with the only catch being it needs to be ordered and eaten before 6pm.

The wait staff obligingly offer a separate menu which outlines the ability to cater to those with dietary differences, with almost all the favourites available gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free. Proudly serving only free range meat from places like Long Bush Pork, Mr Go’s has an awareness of ethical eating and wants customers to join the journey too.

There’s a range of six beers on tap for the hoppy drinkers, often frequented by guest appearances from some of Wellington’s star breweries (think ParrotDog and Garage Project), while wine connoisseurs should be happy with the New Zealand strong line up of reds and whites. House sodas, kombucha and Karma organic juices look after the non-alcoholic drinkers, or there’s even a solid cocktail list for the party people themselves.
